Contrary to popular belief, clearcutting and old-growth logging is not rare or exceptional practices in BC – they are still the norm in vast areas. Thousands of hectares of endangered old-growth forests are still being clearcut each year.
Big Lonely Doug, discovered in early 2014 by Ancient Forest Alliance campaigners to be the 2nd largest Douglas-fir tree in Canada, was once a part of the endangered Lower Edinburgh Grove (aka. “Christy Clark Grove”) until the surrounding ancient trees were levelled in 2012.
Now, Big Lonely Doug stands by himself in a clearcut, lonely as ever – save for a few friendly tree-climbers and researchers from the Arboreal Collective and Ascending the Giants!
